Overview

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is shortlisted for University of the Year 2023 (Times Higher Education) and is among the 20 percent of universities in the country who have been awarded a Gold rating in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework - a reflection of the outstanding education ARU offer to their students. The university hosts students from more than 130 countries around the globe and is known for its multicultural community. The university has four campuses, located in Cambridge, Chelmsford, Peterborough and London.

ARU has recently invested GBP 95 million into its facilities. The university is home to one of the only optometry schools in the country and has its own public art gallery, the Ruskin Gallery. It also boasts a state-of-the-art Science Centre, a Law School Clinic, mock law courts, computer gaming suites and libraries which are open 24/7, complete with books and online learning resources.

The university excels in providing support in a variety of different areas. This includes disability support for those who have mental health conditions, medical conditions and learning difficulties. Other support ranges from a counselling service to a friendly International Office that is dedicated to helping international students.

Students can also take advantage of the invaluable careers services when studying at Anglia Ruskin University. The Employability Service provides plenty of help, from assistance with composing CVs to interview preparation. One-to-one sessions are available with advisors, and many useful resources can be found online.

Whilst students are at ARU, they can enjoy one of the many social clubs or societies in their spare time. Through these groups, they can make new friends, learn a new skill and add something unique to their CV. Clubs and societies on offer range from dance class to an alternative music society.

ARU Peterborough

ARU Peterborough opened its doors to students in September 2022. Purpose-built from the ground up for Peterborough and the wider region, it boasts industry standard facilities, all housed inside a brand-new building. ARU Peterborough has a long-term investment in excess of GBP 100m, and an ambition to offer university courses for up to 12,500 students by 2030.

ARU Peterborough has an exciting range of degree courses, which have been co-created with regional businesses, students can be confident that they'll learn the skills in demand by employers.

Rated for University of the Year 2023

ARU is very proud to be the University of the Year at the Times Higher Education 2023 awards!

This accolade celebrates ‘exceptional performance throughout the 2021-22 academic year' and the university is #ARUProud that the success in delivering high-impact projects during this period has been recognised by the judges.

ARU among world's best for health and wellbeing

Anglia Ruskin University has been ranked 1st in the UK and 20th in the world for health and wellbeing in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

ARU was also named as one of the UK's top ten universities for education, social work and sports science courses in the Guardian League Table 2023.

The university was also recognised for the value that it adds to students including student support and graduate outcomes. Final year students have re-iterated this by rating ARU highly in the National Student Survey 2022.

Teaching quality

ARU rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework

ARU is proud to have received a Gold award for the quality of its education in a UK-wide review of university teaching standards.

ARU's course content and delivery is rated as outstanding with the review citing ‘innovative and highly effective course design and content that inspires students to actively engage and commit to their learning'.

Two ARU academics awarded National Teaching Fellowships

In August 2020 Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) lecturers Dr Beatriz Acevedo and Siân Shaw both received National Teaching Fellowships from Advance HE, the highest university award possible, in recognition of the outstanding quality of their teaching.

Dr Acevedo belongs to the Faculty of Business and Law and works with Anglia Learning and Teaching, to help support and professional development for ARU's teaching staff. She is a strong advocate of ''action learning'' and using art in education to empower students. Dr Shaw is the Director of Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the Faculty of Health, Education, Medicine and Social Care. She has a particular interest in technology-enhanced educational methods.

Placements

Undergraduate Placements

Many undergraduate courses offer students the opportunity to take a paid work placement between years two and three of the degree course. During the placement year, students will form lasting professional relationships, gain invaluable industry experience and have the opportunity to apply and enhance skills learnt in the classroom.

Postgraduate Placements

Some postgraduate courses offer Professional Experience pathways, including live professional projects, work shadowing or placement.

Department structure

Department structure

Study options are offered across several faculties and schools:

Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences

A hub of creative and cultural innovation, this faculty's research was deemed as world-leading in six areas in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. Its engagement with arts and culture enriches lives and contributes to the UK's creative economy, worth GBP 17.3 billion, and its students are amongst the most satisfied in the country.

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care

The faculty is the largest provider of health and social care courses in the East of England. Having educated nurses, midwives and social workers for over 25 years, its courses have been designed with the students' careers in mind. Its students learn authentically through the use of state-of-the-art facilities that mirror real-life clinical situations and UK hospital wards.

Faculty of Business and Law

The school offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate business and law courses using advanced learning technologies to ensure students receive a dynamic educational experience. The courses help students develop, challenge the ordinary and be innovative, giving them the confidence to achieve their ambitions and prepare for their career.

Faculty of Science and Engineering

The faculty combines the theory and practical skills students need for a rewarding career. Here, students will learn in the latest laboratories, or on field trips and work placements with leading organisations.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Academic requirements

Both undergraduate and postgraduate students will need to satisfy the minimum qualifications and meet the course-specific and country-specific academic requirements for admission to Anglia Ruskin University.

English language requirements

For undergraduate admission, students will need to satisfy one (or equivalent) of the following:

  • An IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5
  • An ETS TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall, with at least 17 in writing and listening, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking.
  • A Pearson PTE score of 57 overall, with at least 51 in all components.

For postgraduate admission, students will usually need to satisfy one (or equivalent) of the following:

  • An IELTS score of 6.5 with no band lower than 5.5, or equivalent
  • An ETS TOEFL iBT score of 88 overall, with at least 17 in writing and listening, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking.
  • A Pearson PTE score of 61 overall, with at least 51 in all components.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

There are several scholarships open to international students at Anglia Ruskin University. These include:

International Excellence Scholarship – undergraduate and postgraduate

International students are encouraged to apply for this scholarship worth GBP 4,000. Students must be able to demonstrate exceptional academic and extra-curricular achievement. Check the website for deadlines.

International Merit Scholarships – undergraduate and postgraduate

Eligible students will receive an award of GBP 1,000 to GBP 2,000 to help them with their tuition fees. Students are not required to apply for the award as they will be automatically considered on admission.

International Early Payment Discount – undergraduate and postgraduate

Eligible students who pay their tuition fees early will receive a GBP 400 to GBP 1,000 early payment discount.

International Alumni Scholarships – postgraduate

Eligible students will receive an award of GBP 3,000 if they have previously completed a degree at Anglia Ruskin University and are applying for either a full-time taught master's degree, a full-time research degree or a Legal Practice programme.

ARU Peterborough Postgraduate Scholarship

The ARU Peterborough Postgraduate Scholarship is for students joining one of four master's degrees in Peterborough: the MSc International Business Management, MSc Public Health Promotion and MSc Supply Chain Management. Eligible students will receive an award of GBP 4,000, which will be paid in the form of a fee discount and cannot be combined with the ARU Alumni discount.

Facilities

Facilities

Students will benefit from award-wining facilities at ARU, the result of GBP 95m of investment over five years.

Anglia Ruskin University has invested heavily in the nursing and healthcare facilities in its Chelmsford, Cambridge and Peterborough campuses. Here, students can learn in skills rooms, mock operating theatres and wards. Science students will learn in the ARU Science Centre where they can enjoy the SuperLab complex, which features state-of-the-art science labs, a physiology lab and a pharmaceutical research lab.

Optometry students get to study at the University Eye Clinic with qualified professionals it boasts 16 fully equipped testing rooms and the latest optometric equipment such as an optical coherence tomographer, video slitlamps, and videokeratoscopes.

The university's faculty's all feature state-of-the-art facilities including science SuperLabs, a financial trading room and TV studios, computer gaming suites, law clinics and mock law courts.

As well as dedicated studios for all courses, Cambridge School of Art's facilities include illustration and animation studios, printmaking facilities, a dedicated 3D workshop and photography and video facilities.

For some downtime, all students can enjoy the famous Ruskin Gallery, which holds free exhibitions all year round and make use of the gyms at the Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough campuses.

The library and IT facilities are also second to none: students can access the vast online collection 24/7, and will have access to Office 365, Microsoft Teams and Adobe Photoshop CS6 as standard. Students on creative courses have use of Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Students at ARU London can take advantage of 47 state-of-the-art lecture theatres and seminar rooms, as well as computer labs with brand new IT equipment. Large breakout areas with space for students to work and socialise are also available, furnished with sofas and chairs for a more relaxed environment.
